Environment Design — Change the Environment, Not Your Willpower

For ADHD brains, willpower is the most unreliable resource

"I won't look at my phone starting today" — as if this resolution works for ADHD. Willpower is a finite resource, and ADHD brains deplete it faster than typical brains.

Environment Over Willpower

Relying on willpower fails. Instead, create a state where touching the phone is impossible.

Physical removal — Phone in another room. Some use timed lock boxes. If it's out of reach, unconsciously grabbing it becomes impossible.

Digital blocking — Apps like Cold Turkey, Freedom, Forest block social media and YouTube by time. Make unblocking require intentional action.

Space separation — "This desk is for studying," "this couch is for resting." 1:1 mapping of place to activity makes the brain auto-switch modes. This is why studying in bed doesn't work.

Visual cues — Put tasks where you can see them. Whiteboards, post-its, notes next to monitor. ADHD brains forget things that aren't visible.

How to Practice

1

Physically put phone in another room when studying

2

Block social media/YouTube by time with Cold Turkey/Freedom

3

Designate a study-only space — only study happens there

4

Put tasks where visible — whiteboards, post-its
